Harold helps
Miss Brewer sells ladies shoes door to door. She buys shoes from a shoe factory, and then she goes from town to town selling shoes. She sells many shoes to the women in small villages. There are not many shops, and people do not want to
go to town to buy their shoes.
One day, Miss Brewer drove to a new village. She stopped in front of a house. There was a young boy standing beside the door to the house. Miss Brewer opened the window of her van and called to the boy, “Hello. Is your mother at home?”
The boy looked at Miss Brewer and then answered, “Yes, she is.”
Miss Brewer smiled at the boy. She got out of her van and went to the back. She chose some of the most beautiful shoes from the back of the van and then went to the door of the house. The boy smiled at her. She knocked at the door and
then waited, but the door did not open.
After a moment, Miss Brewer knocked at the door again and waited for two minutes. She smiled down at the boy. He smiled back at her. “What is your name?” she asked the boy.
“Harold,” he said.
Miss Brewer waited for the door to open. The door did not open. She knocked at the door again, but no one came to the door. She stopped smiling. She looked at the boy who smiled up at her.
Miss Brewer said in an angry voice, “Harold, your mother is not at home.”
“Yes, she is,” the small boy answered.
“Then why didn’t she open the door?” Miss Brewer asked.
“Because this is not my house,” Harold answered.

Miss Brewer’s story
I sell ladies’ shoes in small villages because there are very few shops there. I buy the shoes from a factory, put them in my van and then drive to villages where I sell them door to door. One day, I drove to a new village where I saw a little boy
standing next to a door. I thought it was his family house so I asked him if his mother was at home. The boy said she was at home so I knocked on the door and waited, but no one answered the door. I knocked again, but no one answered. I looked at the boy angrily and said his mother was not at home, but the boy replied she was. However, he said it wasn’t their house.
Harold’s story
One day, a lady drove to our village where she saw me standing next to a door. I think she thought it was our family house so she asked me if my mother was at home. I said she was at home so the woman knocked on the door and waited, but no one answered the door. She knocked again, but no one answered. She looked at me angrily and said my mother was not at home, but I replied she was. However, I also said it wasn’t our house. Then, I ran away.
