The Burglar

Thomas was sitting on his roof, just outside his bedroom window one dark evening. He was doing his favourite thing: looking at the stars and the outlines of his neighbours’ rooftops. When the wind started to blow heavily, he decided he would climb back into the comfort and warmth of his bed.

Not long after he had drifted into a deep sleep, his dreams were disturbed by a great, big, CRASH. Thomas looked out of the window towards the end of the garden where the sound emerged from. Because it was dark, he couldn’t see anything the matter, so he decided to go back to bed.

A short while later, there was a loud banging at his front door.

“Open up!” shouted a very stern policeman.

Thomas launched himself forward, so he was sat upright in bed panicking about whatever the matter was downstairs.

“Open up now!” the policeman repeated, only this time, more aggressively.

Thomas heard a commotion occurring downstairs as his father opened the door. The conversation grew wilder. Although he couldn’t hear distinct words, the muffled chatter was enough for Thomas to know that it was serious. Suddenly, Thomas’ little sister, Lily, burst into Thomas’ room in a hurry.

“Thomas, there’s a burglar in the house!” Lily cried.

“What?!” he replied, anxiously.

Before Lily could explain, their conversation was interrupted by the sound of dogs barking outside. Thomas and Lily peered out of his bedroom window to see two policemen with a dog each, searching the garden with torches.

“I’m in the room now!” Thomas and Lily both shrieked as the booming voice behind them drilled through their ears. The policeman was talking on his radio to the other policemen in the garden.

“How do you know there is a burglar in the house?” Thomas’ father followed him into the room.

“Well,” began the policeman, “your opposite neighbour informed us that they saw someone climbing in through this window from the roof about 45 minutes ago.”

Thomas’ father looked concerned, Lily looked petrified and Thomas, well… Thomas looked rather embarrassed.

Thomas’ story

I was sitting on the roof while I was looking at the stars and the outlines of our neighbours’ rooftops. When the wind started to blow heavily, I returned to my bedroom.

Not long after I had fallen asleep, there was a loud crash which woke me up, but I couldn’t see anything in the dark so I went back to bed.

A short while later, there was a loud banging at our front door, and a stern policeman shouted, “Open up now!”

After my father had opened the door, the conversation between him and the policeman grew wilder, and I knew it was serious. Meanwhile, 2 other policemen were searching the garden with dogs and torches.

Suddenly, my sister, Lily, burst into my room in a hurry and said there was a burglar in the house which frightened us. When the stern policeman came into my room, my father followed him and asked him how he knew there was a burglar in the house.

The policeman said that our opposite neighbour had reported a person on the roof.

The policeman’s story

One evening, someone reported a burglar in the neighbourhood, so I and 2 other colleagues went to the scene. I banged at the front door and shouted, “Open up now!”

After the father had opened the door, the conversation between him and me grew wilder. Meanwhile, my colleagues were searching the garden with dogs and torches.

Suddenly, I heard someone burst into a room upstairs in a hurry. When I went into the room, the father followed me and asked me how we knew there was a burglar in the house.

I said that their opposite neighbour had reported a person on the roof. The father looked concerned, his daughter looked petrified, but the boy … well, he looked rather embarrassed.
