A cinema ticket

Kelly had been waiting all week to watch the latest romantic comedy film at the cinema. There was a bit of a problem, however. Kelly had spent all week daydreaming about the movie, so much that she had forgotten to do her chores and had neglected her homework.

She arrived home from school on Friday and rushed to her room to get ready for the movie. Whilst she was getting ready, she called her friend, Sacha, to express her excitement.

“I can’t believe the movie is finally out! I wish you didn’t have your auntie’s party tonight because then you could come with me, and I wouldn’t have to go alone!”

As her conversation continued, Kelly’s mother approached her bedroom door holding two cups of coffee.

“I haven’t done any of my chores or homework all week, but I can’t tell mum because she wouldn’t let me go out.” Kelly moaned.

Just then, having heard the conversation, Kelly’s mum swung the door open.

“I made you a coffee, Kelly,” she said as she set it down on Kelly’s dressing table. “Good girl for doing your homework and chores before going out tonight. I’m proud of you for being responsible,” she prompted to test Kelly.

“Oh, well actually…” Kelly paused for a second as she chose her next words carefully. “…actually, they didn’t take too long.” Her mother’s smile darkened into a frown.

“Ok, that’s it. Give me the cinema ticket. I heard you on the phone just now.”

“But mum!”

“I was actually going to let you go tonight if you had been honest about your chores and homework, but instead, you lied to me!” she snapped as she took the ticket from Kelly.

“Wait mum, stop!”

“I can’t stop, dear. It appears I now have a movie to watch!”

Audio 05-6 Story versions

The story (version A)

Kelly had been waiting to see the latest romantic movie the whole week and had been daydreaming about the movie. She had been so excited that she had not only forgotten about doing her chores but had neglected her homework as well.

On Friday, when she arrived home from school, she rushed into her room to be ready soon for the movie.  While she was getting ready, she called her friend, Sacha to tell her how excited she was and how much she regretted that she couldn’t join her.

She was talking to Sacha when her mum approached her door with 2 cups of coffee. She overheard Kelly’s conversation that she hadn’t done her chores or her homework. Just then, her mum came into the room and said that she was immensely proud of her daughter because she was so responsible.

However, her praise was only a test. When Kelly replied her chores and homework weren’t so hard, her mum grew angry with her response and snapped at Kelly, “You lied to me!”.

In the end, she took the ticket from Kelly and decided to go to the cinema herself, instead of Kelly.

The story (version B)

Kelly had been waiting to see the latest romantic movie the whole week. She had been daydreaming about the movie and had been so excited that she had forgotten about doing her chores. Also, she had neglected her homework.

On Friday, as soon as she had arrived home from school, she rushed into her room so that she would be ready soon for the movie. As she was getting ready, she called her friend, Sacha. She wanted to tell her not only how excited she was but also how much she regretted that she couldn’t join her.

While she was talking to Sacha, her mum approached her door with 2 cups of coffee and accidentally overheard Kelly’s conversation. Kelly said she hadn’t done either her chores or her homework. When her mum came into the room, she said that she was immensely proud of her daughter and that Kelly was so responsible, but her praise was only a test.

Kelly replied her chores and homework weren’t so hard which made her mum grow angry. She snapped at Kelly, “You lied to me!”, took the ticket from her and decided that, instead of Kelly, she would go to the cinema herself.
