The Barbecue

Sally was torn. Her best friend, Jane, was having a barbecue for her 25th birthday; however, she had already promised that she would go out with her other friend, Emma, on that same day. Emma wanted to go out to a club, which wasn’t really the sort of thing that Sally enjoyed. Reluctantly, Sally turned down the invitation to Jane’s barbecue because she had already promised to go out with Emma. For the whole week leading up to the barbecue, Sally felt so upset and also jealous that she couldn’t attend.

On the day that Sally was supposed to be going out clubbing with Emma and Emma’s friends, she couldn’t bare it anymore. She wanted so badly to be at the barbecue instead.

“I’m so sorry, but I’m not feeling at all well, I don’t think I’ll make it out tonight!” Sally whispered down the phone to Emma, faking a cough here and there. Sally felt bad for lying to her friend, but she really didn’t want to go clubbing.

“Oh, not to worry. Get some rest, and we can always go out again when you’re better.”

Sally rolled her eyes but agreed and hung up the phone. She eagerly rushed to her wardrobe in search for something to wear for Jane’s barbecue. She found a lovely white summer dress covered in embroidery stitched flowers. She did her make-up to match the flower’s petals, so she applied deep red and fierce orange. Her sandals completed the outfit, perfect for the warm afternoon ahead.

Sally left for the shops to pick up some things for the barbecue. She walked over to the till and lifted her basket up onto the counter.

 “Sally?”

She froze as she looked into the cashier’s face.

“Oh, hello Emma! I completely forgot you worked here!” Sally’s face went bright red.

“I thought you were ill?” Emma said without patience.

“Yes, I am, I just thought I should get some fluids and food in my body to make me feel better, you know.”

“What, wine and ice cream?” Emma snapped back. “You’re not sick at all.”

Audio 05-6 Story versions

The story (version A)

Sally wanted to attend Jane`s barbecue, but (she) had promised that she would go out clubbing with Emma. Since the barbecue and the club night were on the same day, Sally was torn between the two. She wanted to keep her promise to Emma, so she reluctantly turned down the invitation to the barbecue. However, on the day of the clubbing, Sally changed her mind.

When she called Emma to tell her she was ill, she faked coughs over the telephone call and said she couldn’t manage to attend which Emma understood, so they agreed they could go out when Sally was feeling better.

As soon as Sally had hung up the phone, she eagerly rushed to her wardrobe to pick an outfit for the barbecue. Then she matched her make-up with the dress. Because it was a warm afternoon, Sally picked sandals to complete her outfit and went into the shop in order to pick up some things for the barbecue.

When She walked over to the till and lifted her basket, she heard Emma call out her name which made her freeze. Emma was the cashier at the shop Sally was in. Sally blushed and tried to explain herself saying she needed some fluid and food.

Emma was having none of her excuses and pointing to the wine and ice cream in Sally`s basket, she implied Sally was a liar.

The story (version B)

Sally wanted to attend Jane`s barbecue. However, she had promised that she would go out clubbing with Emma but because the barbecue and the club night were on the same day, Sally was torn between the two. She wanted to keep her promise to Emma; that’s why she reluctantly turned down the invitation to the barbecue.

On the day of the clubbing, Sally changed her mind, so she called Emma to tell her she was ill while faking coughs over the telephone call and saying she couldn’t manage to attend. Emma said she understood, and they agreed they could go out when Sally was feeling better.

When Sally hung up the phone, she eagerly rushed to her wardrobe so that she would (or could) pick an outfit for the barbecue. After doing so, she matched her make-up with the dress. It was a warm afternoon, so Sally picked sandals to complete her outfit.

She went into the shop to pick up some things for the barbecue. When walking over to the till and lifting her basket, she heard Emma call out her name. Sally froze. Realising that Emma was the cashier at the shop she was inSally blushed.

Trying to explain herself, she said she needed some fluid and food, but Emma was having none of her excuses. As she pointed to the wine and ice cream in Sally`s basket, she implied Sally was a liar.
