The Tattoo

Lisa is 23 years old, and she’s a big fan of tattoos. She’s got over 20 tattoos now. She loves them all a great deal, except for one: her first.

As soon as Lisa had turned 18, she and her friend Emily got their first tattoos; something they had been really looking forward to. There was one problem, however.

Lisa’s father, Darren, was strictly against tattoos. He hated the idea of a scar that a tattooist inflicted onto someone’s body. He made his feelings very clear to Lisa too. Lisa knew that if she was going to get a tattoo, it would need to be small and somewhere easily hidden so that her father wouldn’t know about it.

On the day that Lisa and Emily went to the tattoo parlour, the tattooist presented them with a huge folder full of tattoo designs. As they flicked through, they pointed to the possible designs that would be easy for Lisa to hide. There were animals, emblems, quotes, logos, but the one that she liked best was a little Japanese symbol. It was small, quirky and she loved the meaning of it.

“That one!” Lisa exclaimed in excitement, as she jabbed the page with her finger.

“That would look good on your waist, and your dad would never see it because it would be covered every day with a top,” Emily added.

With that, they both got their tattoos and left the parlour.

About a week later Lisa’s father, Darren, walked through the front door after a golfing trip with Emily’s father. He stormed straight into Lisa’s room.

“Lisa, have you got a tattoo?” Darren sharply accused straight away.
“No!” Lisa’s voice was panicky.
“Don’t you dare lie to me, young lady! Emily’s dad told me that you two had gone to a tattooist together!”

Darren was furious. Firstly, for the tattoo and secondly, for the lie.

“I’m sorry, it’s just that I knew you wouldn’t like it.” Lisa looked very awkward. “I’m sorry for lying, it’s only a small one though near my hip. It’s just a pretty Japanese symbol!”

“What does it even mean?” Darren snapped back.

“It means …” As Lisa began to explain its meaning, she grew even more awkward. “It means ‘Honesty’.”
