The Train Station

Granny June was visiting her grandson, William, who she hadn’t seen in a whole year. He had moved from London up to the Midlands to marry his fiancée. It was only for a weekend, but they both had a lovely time catching up. They went for lunches, they visited an art gallery and had a lovely roast dinner on Sunday, cooked by William’s wife. Sadly, it was time for Granny June to leave, so William drove her to the train station.

“Grandad is going to meet you at Waterloo station. Will you let me know when you get home safely?” William said as he was giving her a hug.

“Oh, I wish I didn’t have to go,” Granny June said as they were standing at the entrance to the train station ready to board her train back to London.

“It’s been great to see you. We can make sure you come down more often, ok?” William blushed. He felt bad that it had been so long.

Before Granny June could say, “Yes, that would be lovely,” the train had pulled onto the platform two minutes early. In haste to catch the train, she kissed him on the cheek and dragged her suitcase through the platform barriers. William waved her off and waited for the train to depart.

Just as he turned to leave, the overhead announcement called, “Next train to Platform 1 will be the 15:09 service to London.”

William stopped. He was very confused. He approached the train conductor who was standing just on the other side of the barriers.

“Excuse me.” The train conductor turned around. “The announcement just said that the next train to come is going to London. Was that not the train that had just departed?”

“Oh, no,” began the conductor. “There are engineering works on Platform 3, so they had to divert that train onto Platform 1.”

“Well, where is that train going? I’ve just put my Granny on that train thinking it was going to London!” William started to panic.

“Sir, that train is on its way to Scotland.”
