The Psychology of Socks
When he was a secondary school student, Jason loved football. He wasn’t the best player, but he was quite decent. However, once he scored an own goal in a very important football match. He felt embarrassed, and his friends and teammates made fun of him too. But, Jason didn’t give up; instead, he decided to get better. He started to train harder than anyone in the football team and soon became one of the best strikers in his school; still, he never forgot about the humiliation he faced when he scored that unfortunate own goal.
Recently, Jason has got into college. Soon, he was qualified for the college football team. He was a striker. His coach suggested that he should take extra sessions to get better at scoring goals because the upcoming Youth Football Championship was quite close.
His coach told Jason to take a look at the goalkeeper’s feet. Jason could then see which way the keeper would expect Jason’s kick to go. If the feet showed that the goalkeeper was ready to jump left, then Jason should shoot the opposite way – to the right – in order to score.
One day, Jason was bragging to his classmates in a local restaurant about his football training and told them about his new technique. Unfortunately, while he was saying this, the goalkeeper from the rival team was sitting within earshot. As soon as he had got back home, he sat down to formulate a strategy for the big day of the championship.
On the day of the championship, Jason managed to go past all his opponents, and he was in front of the rival goalkeeper. He wanted to apply his new technique, so he looked down to the keeper’s feet. He saw that the rival was wearing socks with his team’s logo on it. He froze in terror as he feared that he might again score an own goal. The opportunity to score was lost within a moment.
