Driving Offence
Marcus is known for causing trouble in his neighbourhood. He is not a nice person at all. Aside from his bad reputation, he is not quite intelligent either and lacks common sense. Marcus makes his money through theft and drug dealing and has a long list of clients who he has deceived.
One day, Marcus was driving through his hometown with a substantial amount of drugs in his boot. While he was driving, he was smiling in the knowledge that he was about to make a lot of money from the drugs. His smile soon vanished, however, when he heard sirens.
Blue and red lights were flashing behind him, and immediately sweat poured down Marcus’ face. He was shaking for fear of what the police officer knew. Pretending that he couldn’t see the lights or hear the sirens, he drove on. In retaliation, the police car sped up and drove side by side with Marcus. The policeman wagged his finger, shouting at Marcus to stop driving and pull over. With a big gulp, Marcus pulled over and turned his car engine off.
“Do you know why I pulled you over?” the policeman sternly said.
“Ugh, no?” Marcus lied.
“I’ve seen you around before; I know that you have a bad reputation and what kind of person you are. Be honest. Do you know why I pulled you over?”
Marcus rolled his eyes. “Fine… Yes, I do know,” he said, hanging his head.
“Good. Now don’t let me see you speeding again,” the policeman said as he handed Marcus a slip of paper.
Marcus tried to hide his relief from the police officer. When he got back into his car, his smile grew across his face.
“Thank goodness,” he said to himself, “I thought he had seen that I wasn’t wearing a seat belt!”

Audio 05-6 Story versions
The story (version A)
Marcus, who is a drug dealer and a thief, has a bad reputation. Apart from the fact that he is not so bright, he lacks common sense. One day, just as he was driving through the town delivering a substantial amount of drugs, he was cheerful knowing that he would make a fortune from the drugs, but his smile soon faded when he heard sirens and saw red and blue lights flashing behind him.
He feared of what the police officer might know, so pretending that he couldn’t hear the sirens or see the lights, he drove on. As the police car came next to his car, the officer shouted at him to pull over. Gulping, Marcus pulled over and stopped the car. The policeman sternly said that he knew that Marcus had a bad reputation and added that he knew what kind of person he was, but then asked if Marcus knew why he had pulled him over.
Marcus denied at first saying that he didn’t, but then admitted that he did know. Interrupting, the officer told Marcus not to ever speed again and gave him a ticket. Marcus got back into his car with a broad smile on his face, saying to himself, “Thank goodness, he didn’t see that I wasn’t wearing a seat belt!”
The story (version B)
Being a drug dealer and a thief, Marcus has a bad reputation. Besides the fact that he is not bright, he lacks common sense. One day, driving through the town, he was delivering a substantial amount of drugs. He was cheerful in the knowledge of making a fortune from the drugs.
However, his smile soon faded the moment he heard sirens and saw red and blue lights flashing behind him. Fearing of what the police officer might know, he pretended that he couldn’t hear the sirens or see the lights and drove on until the police car came next to his car and the officer shouted at him to pull over. Marcus gulped, pulled over and stopped the car.
The policeman sternly said, “I know that you have a bad reputation.” and added, “I know what kind of person you are.” Then he asked, “Do you know why I pulled you over?” Denying at first, Marcus said, “No, I don’t.”, but then admitted, “Fine … Yes, I do know.”
However, the officer interrupted, and after having told Marcus not to ever speed again, he gave him a ticket. When getting back into his car with a broad smile on his face, Marcus said to himself, “Thank goodness, he didn’t see that I wasn’t wearing a seat belt!”
