A Job Interview
Delia walked into her local coffee shop. It was a small independent coffee shop with only one barista, so it was usually quite busy. On this particular day, however, it was not. Delia stormed straight up to the counter and read through the menu on the wall.
“Ugh. I’ll have a Flat White, I suppose,” she groaned.
Noticing that she looked unimpressed, the barista said, “Is something wrong? If you tell me what you’d like, then maybe I can make it?”
“No,” she snapped back. “I just hate coffee, that’s all.”
“Then why are you ordering coffee? We also sell tea and hot chocolate,” said the barista helpfully.
“Can you mind your own business? I said, ‘I’ll have a Flat White’,” she rudely replied.
The man hung his head and went about making her coffee. He wanted to say something about her rude manner but kept his thoughts to himself. While Delia was waiting, she took some painkiller tablets out of her bag. She rolled her eyes and swallowed them.
“Here you are, ma’am. Your Flat White.”
She grunted and sat down at a small table by the shop window. As she grudgingly drank her coffee, she kept a scolding stare on the barista. The barista timidly went about tidying behind the counter but, at one point, locked eyes with her.
“If you must know…” Delia began as she called across to him, “I have to wake myself up for a job interview. I ordered a coffee because I need caffeine. I was partying late last night and drank way too much alcohol, so now I’ve got a headache.”
“Oh, I see. Well, good luck with your job interview.”
Delia said nothing.
“What job are you interviewing for?” he said, trying to be civil.
“Here.”
The barista’s eyebrows raised in shock.
