A Lesson to Learn
“Please, David, you never buy me nice things!” Lola pleaded with her husband while she was looking longingly into a jewelry store. There was a very simple but beautiful silver ring behind the glass.
“I don’t buy you jewelry anymore because you lose it! You always take your rings off, fiddle around with them and then forget that you’ve taken them off and lose them!” David plainly told her.
“I promise I won’t do it this time!” she desperately said. After a small debate, David entered the shop and bought her the ring.
A week later, David and Lola went to a bar to celebrate a friend’s birthday. At the end of the night, David noticed, as he got up to leave, a simple but beautiful silver ring lying on the floor under the chair where Lola had just minutes earlier been showing off her new ring. To teach Lola a lesson about losing her rings, he picked it up and put it in his pocket without saying a word to Lola.
Two days later, David overheard Lola speaking on the phone to her friend who was at the bar.
“I’ve not seen the ring since we were at the bar…” Lola said whilst in conversation with her friend. David burst in.
“Aha! I knew you’d lose the ring. You left it at the bar, so I kept it to teach you a lesson.”
“David…this is my ring!” She showed David her ring, which she was wearing. “You found Sarah’s ring! I wanted this ring because it was like hers. She phoned to ask if we had seen it. Clearly, you don’t trust me! I’ll tell Sarah that you have it,” Lola irritably said.
“Wait!” David said as he felt inside his pocket, “I’ve lost it!”

“I don’t buy you jewellery anymore because you always lose it!” David chided her, but Lola desperately promised that she wouldn’t do it this time.
After a little argument between them, David bought her the ring, and a week later, they attended a friend’s birthday in a bar where Lola was showing off her new ring during the party.
At the end of the night, just as David was leaving the party, he saw a beautiful silver ring lying on the floor under Lola’s chair.
To teach Lola a lesson, David picked up the ring and put it in his pocket without saying a word.
Two days later, he overheard Lola, who was speaking on the phone with her friend from the bar.
When Lola said that she hadn’t seen the ring since they were at the bar, David, bursting in on their conversation, exclaimed triumphantly, “Aha! I knew you’d lose the ring.”
He continued saying that he had picked it up and kept it to teach Lola a lesson, but Lola interrupted, “David…this is my ring!”
She showed David her ring, which she was still wearing.
Then she explained that their rings looked exactly the same and David had found Sarah’s ring, which she had lost in the bar.
After she had irritably said to David that he clearly didn’t trust her, she wanted to tell Sarah that David had the ring, but feeling inside his pocket, David awkwardly said, “Wait! I’ve lost it!”
