The Lost Jumper

“Mum!” Kelly shouted up the stairs.

“What do you want Kelly? I’m on the toilet!” she called back downstairs to her.

Kelly was furious because she couldn’t find her favourite jumper, which she had only just purchased two days before.

“Sophie has taken my jumper, that’s what!”

“What’s wrong with her wearing your jumper? She won’t damage it,” her mum asked Kelly who was now standing outside the bathroom door.

“That’s not the point! It’s my favourite jumper, and she didn’t even ask to wear it. I wanted to wear it today. It’s very smart and perfectly matches my outfit!” Kelly stormily said.

“Well, you, girls, need to learn to share then. Go into my cupboard and choose one of my jumpers to wear if you don’t have any others.”

Kelly ignored her mum and rushed to her bedroom. She threw open her wardrobe doors and pulled out her clothes item by item.

“This won’t do…that is ugly…this one doesn’t even fit me,” she was thinking to herself as she held each individual item.

Then she stopped in her tracks. She slowly turned around with a glare in her eye. She could see Sophie’s bedroom door and suddenly had an idea. Kelly thought that if Sophie was wearing her jumper, then she could wear one of Sophie’s.

She opened Sophie’s wardrobe and dug through her clothes until she found Sophie’s favourite, most expensive dress. It was fairly casual but beautiful, and Kelly proudly left the house wearing it.

As soon as the door had slammed shut, Kelly’s mother stepped out of the bathroom with a sigh of relief. She walked down the stairs into the kitchen to make some lunch. As she passed a mirror in the hallway, she admired herself and thought, “Hmm. Kelly’s jumper fits me perfectly!’

Audio 05-6 Story versions

The story (version A)

“Mum!” Kelly yelled up the stairs. Her mum, who was in the bathroom, shouted back, “What do you want Kelly, I’m on the toilet.”

Kelly couldn’t find her favourite jumper, which she had bought 2 days before. The assumption that her sister had taken her jumper enraged her. “What’s wrong with her wearing your jumper?” her mum asked adding that she wouldn’t damage it.

Kelly was now standing outside the bathroom, arguing that it was her favourite jumper, and she hadn’t even asked to wear it. Besides, she wanted to wear it that day since it perfectly matched her outfit. When her mum offered her to pick a jumper from her cupboard, Kelly ignored her.

Storming back into her bedroom, she opened her wardrobe wide and pulled out her clothes item by item but didn’t like any of them.

Suddenly, she stopped in her tracks. When turning around, she saw Sophie’s bedroom door and had a vengeful idea. Opening up Sophie’s wardrobe, she started searching for her sister’s dearest, most expensive dress, which was casual but beautiful.

After Kelly had put it on, she left the house proudly wearing it. Kelly’s mum, hearing her slam the door, stepped out of the bathroom with a sigh of relief and walked down the stairs to the kitchen to make some lunch.

Just as she was passing a mirror in the hallway, she saw her reflection and thought to herself, “Hmm. Kelly’s jumper fits me perfectly!”

The story (version B)

“Mum!” Kelly yelled up the stairs to her mum, who was in the bathroom. She shouted back, “What do you want Kelly, I’m on the toilet.”, and Kelly replied that she couldn’t find her favourite jumper. She had bought it 2 days before and now was enraged because she assumed that her sister had taken her jumper.

Her mum asked what was wrong with her wearing Kelly’s jumper; after all, she wouldn’t damage it. Kelly was now standing outside the bathroom. “It’s my favourite jumper, and she didn’t even ask to wear it.” she argued, wanting to wear it that day as it perfectly matched her outfit.

Her mum offered her to pick a jumper from her cupboard, but, ignoring her mother, Kelly stormed back into her bedroom, opened her wardrobe wide and pulled out her clothes item by item. However, she didn’t like any of them.

Then she stopped in her tracks and turned around. The moment she saw Sophie’s bedroom door, she had a vengeful idea. Having opened up Sophie’s wardrobe, she started searching for her sister’s dearest, most expensive dress. It was casual but beautiful, so putting it on, Kelly left the house proudly wearing it.

When Kelly’s mum heard her slam the door, she stepped out of the bathroom with a sigh of relief and walked down the stairs to the kitchen so that she would make some lunch.

Passing a mirror in the hallway, she saw her reflection and thought to herself, “Hmm. Kelly’s jumper fits me perfectly!”
