A Shoplifter’s Decision
Dan looked up and down the shelves of the local convenience store anticipating what he could get away with shoplifting. He had been shoplifting for five years and targeted this shop most weeks.
As he slipped a bottle of wine inside his coat, he noticed something strange. There was a man waiting at the counter to be served, but he had no items to buy in his hands. Instead, he had one hand firmly in his jacket pocket, and the other hand was furiously trembling as he wiped sweat from his forehead. Dan knew immediately that he was armed with a gun and was attempting to rob the shop tills, so he quietly stepped into the back room where the owner of the shop was stacking boxes.
“There’s a man with a gun in there. You need to call the police!” he urgently whispered.
The owner panicked a little but took Dan’s advice, and within minutes the police arrived and arrested the armed man.
“Thank you so much! I could have lost all my money and possibly my life if it weren’t for you,” the owner sighed with relief.
“Don’t worry about it, honestly.”
Dan felt rather guilty. He suddenly understood how important this shop was to the man and felt bad that he had secretly been stealing from him for years.
“Please, let me show my appreciation to you,” the owner pleaded. “I’ll give you 60% off of everything you ever get from my store.”
Dan thought about this generous offer. He was currently getting items for free since he was stealing them, so was this discount really of much impact? He could see that the man had tears in his eyes and remembered again how much worth the shop had to the owner. In the end, Dan agreed to the discount and never stole again.

“There’s a man with a gun in there,” he quickly whispered to the owner. “Call the police!”
This made the owner panic a little, but he took Dan’s advice, and within minutes, the police arrived at the scene and arrested the armed man. The owner thanked Dan for saving both his money and, possibly, his life.
Dan, who finally understood how important the shop was to the owner, felt rather guilty and ashamed for stealing from him for years.
“Please, let me show my appreciation to you,” the owner pleaded and offered Dan a 60% discount off of everything he would ever get from his store. Dan reflected on the generosity of this offer as he was currently getting items from this shop for free, but when he noticed that the owner had tears of gratitude in his eyes, he remembered just how much the shop meant to the owner.
In the end, he agreed to the discount and never stole again.
