Modul 5: Hangutánzó szavak: 04 Jockey in the Making
Sounds: bang, cracking, thundering
Video 01
Hi. Let’s look at some more sounds.
I think everyone knows the sound that this makes. A gun goes bang. It is a very loud, scary noise. It would normally frighten someone if they heard this and were not expecting it, because we associate it, we relate the sound, with danger.
Let’s look at another object that can be used as a weapon. This is a whip. When whipping something, the whip cracks. Painful right!
Here is another type of whip that also cracks. This is a Jockey’s whip. A Jockey uses the whip to control the speed of the horse that they ride. If you are at a horse race, you can hear when the horses speed up because of hooves thundering on the ground. Hooves thunder.
The Story: Jockey in the Making (with explanation)
The sun is shining and the crowds have gathered. Ladies and Gentlemen the race is about to commence.
On this sunny day, the crowds have gathered. Lots of people have joined together to watch the race that is about to commence, which means that the race is about to start.
The Jockey’s mount their horses and ready themselves for the start of the championship.
The jockeys (the people riding the horses) mount, or get on, their horses and ready themselves for the start of the championship.
The bets have been taken and are now closed. Best of luck to all who have put money down. Here we go.
Bets are when people put money down for a particular outcome usually in sports. At the horse race, people have bet money for a certain horse to win the race. So the bets have been taken and are now closed. Best of luck to everyone who put money down on a particular horse to win. Here we go, let’s begin.
The starting pistol is being aimed at the sky and…there it is, the bang of the gun has indicated the start of the race, the barriers are lifted and the horses are out!
The starting pistol is a gun that if fired at the beginning of a race and it indicates, lets everyone know, that the race has started. The barriers, the gates, that keep the horses back are lifted and the horses begin to run.
This exciting new championship has begun and we are off to a fantastic start.
The champion is exciting, not boring. It’s exciting and the start of the race is fantastic.
Number 7 has bolted ahead just milliseconds ahead of Number 3 who is currently coming up on the inside.
The Number 7 horse has bolted ahead. It’s run ahead as fast as lightning. Number 7 is faster that Number 3 but number 3 is really close behind and about to overtake number seven.
Number 9 is falling behind there and is clearly desperate for some speed because the jockey is cracking his whip against the horse which seems to be giving him a small boost
Number 9 is slow compared to the other horses and is clearly desperate for, or really needs some more speed. How do we know this? Because the jockey is cracking his whip against the horse and it’s working, he’s getting a little boost. He’s getting more power.
“Freddie! What on earth is all this noise?” Freddie, who was pretending to be commentating for a horse race, put down his toy horses and looked up at his mother who was standing above him.
What is going on here? We’ve been listening to Freddie playing with his toys pretending to be at a horse race. He puts his toy horse down when he hears his mother say, “Freddie! What on earth is all this noise?” She is standing next to him looking down at him.
“Mum you interrupted my game! Number 9 was about to surprise the crowds by winning!” Freddie said with a discouraging groan.
Freddie’s mum has disturbed his game. He tells her that the slow horse, Number 9, was about to win the race. How does he say this to her? He groans with discouragement. This means that he was downhearted.
Well I’m sorry but you are going to put a hole through my floor if you don’t stop stamping your feet!” She said with a compassionate smile.
Stamping is when you put your feet down on the ground with force. Because of Freddie’s stamping, his mother joked that he would stamp through the ceiling! How do we know she was joking? Because she said it with a compassionate smile. A smile that showed she was sorry to ruin his game but that she loved him.
“But mum, I need to stamp my feet to make the sound of the thundering hooves!”
Freddie pleads with her, he tells her that he needs to make the stamping because he needs to create the sound of thundering hooves.
