Modul 5: Hangutánzó szavak: 07 Aisle of Fright

Sounds: beating, tapping, crinkling, chiming

Video 01

Hi. Let’s look at some more sounds.

Arguably the most famous sound is made of two beats(demonstrate). Can you tell what it is? That is the beating of a heart. The heart is always beating because it is keeping you alive, but there are many reasons why it may quicken; when you exercise or when you are nervous or when you are excited about something, perhaps being around the person that you are in love with. (demonstrate).

Let’s look at a sound that can occur when you are then opposite of excited. Do you ever do this when you are bored or impatiently waiting for something? I do. This sound is ‘tapping’ and is very repetitive. It can also be done as a nervous habit. (demonstrate quicker tapping).

What is this sound? This is paper crinkling. Maybe you have written something that you’re not happy with so you furiously screw it up…or maybe you are just throwing something into the bin (demonstrate action).

Let’s look at one more sound. These bells are chimingBells chiming is a happy sound to hear when you are at a wedding but they are not so nice to hear when you are in bed trying to sleep!

The Story: Aisle of Fright (with explanation)

Ashley is standing at the threshold of the church where she is about to get married.

The threshold of a building is the doorway. The threshold is the line between being inside or outside. So, Ashley is standing at the threshold of the church where she is about to get married.

Her feet are glued to the ground; at least, that’s how she feels at this moment. The church is full of Ashley’s closest friends and family all eagerly awaiting her entrance.

Of course, her feet are not literally glued to the ground, this is a figure of speech, it is a metaphorical way of saying that she is so unsure of going in that she feels like she can’t move her feet at all…at least that is how she feels at this moment and all of her friends and family are waiting for her to come in.

Ashley is aware that people are waiting for her, but right now, her focus is on her heart which is beating louder and louder as she wonders if she is making the right decision.

Ashley is aware, she knows about the people waiting inside, but her focus is on her heart. She is only paying attention to her heart which is beating louder and louder. Why is it beating so loud? Because she wonders, she thinks to herself whether she is doing the right thing in marrying her fiance.

Ashley was due to walk down the aisle 20 minutes ago so her guests are concerned about her whereabouts.

Another way of saying a time when you are expected to do something is saying due. Ashley is expected to walk down the aisle, which is the walkway that a bride walks down at her wedding. So she was due to go down the aisle 20 minutes ago. She is late and her guests are concerned (worried) about where she is.

The minister is tapping his fingers on the bible that is positioned on the altar in front of him.

Altars are decorated tables at the front of churches. The minister is tapping his fingers on his bible that is on the altar in this church.

The best man is having a conversation with someone on his mobile phone, and Ashley’s mother is panicking so much so that she nervously crinkles her wedding invitation in her hands.

When two people get married, the groom will choose a ‘best man’ who is the male equivalent of a Maid of Honour. The best man has responsibilities at a wedding. He will make a speech about the groom, he looks after the rings and makes sure that the day goes well for the bride and groom. The best man at this wedding is on the phone talking with someone. Ashley’s mother is crinkling her wedding invitation in her hands.

With every chime of the church bells, Ashley takes a deep breath in and out. She can feel herself starting to relax, her heartbeat slows, and she starts to step forwards  into the church.

She relaxes her breathing to the chimes of the church bells. Her heartbeat is slowing down so she steps forward.

As she reaches the doors to enter, Louie, the best man, approaches to give her news that she isn’t expecting at all.

She is just about to go into the church but the best man approaches, or comes over to Ashley to tell her something that she isn’t expecting. News that she doesn’t think that she is about to hear.

It turns out that Ashley wasn’t the only one with cold feet. Her fiance, Matt, was also feeling nervous. Louie had just been on the phone to Matt who had said that he cannot go through with the wedding.

To have cold feet is to be so nervous about something that you don’t think you can go through with it. Ashley isn’t the only one with cold feet. Matt was also nervous and it was him that Louie was on the phone to. Matt said that he can’t continue with the wedding.
