Sounds: patter, purr, slam, screech

Hiya! Let’s continue our series on sounds, shall we? Here we go.

When rain hits the roof, it patters. Right now you can hear the patter of rain.

When you’re angry and irritated, you might shut the door and make a lot of noise. If so, you slam the door. This sound is the slamming of a door.

When you drive and you suddenly have to stop the car, the wheels might make a very distinctive sound. We call it the screech of tyres.

When the engine of a car is working and makes a deep, monotonous sound, we call it the purr of an engine. Good. Now let’s place them all into a little story, right?

The Story: Ticked off

Jimmy got up really irritated one morning—you know, he was totally burnt out. He’d had a horrible night. He just couldn’t fall asleep due to the never-ending patter of rain on the roof. He was tossing and turning in bed all night long.

Now he was so ticked off that he slammed every door in the house he went through: the kitchen, the bathroom, the bedroom…

Jimmy rushed out to his car and got in. He started the engine; the neighbours could hear it purring. He reversed and then a screech, a crash, a wailing siren and then total silence… Jimmy woke up in hospital.

This is the end of our mini-lesson. Now go and practise. See you soon!
