Modul 5: Hangutánzó szavak: 13 Ticket to Ride

Sounds: beep, zooming, rumble

Video 01

Hi. Let’s look at some more sounds.

In this video, we are going to concentrate on the sounds made by vehicles, a car and a train. The first is very familiar. A car horn beeps. We beep when in traffic, we beep out of anger and we beep to warn somebody about danger.

Car accidents are often caused because of people speeding- when they are driving too fast. Have you ever noticed the sound a car makes when it speeds past you? It zoomsYou would hear this noise a lot if you were to watch formula 1 racing.

The final sound we are going to look at is what you can hear when a train comes towards you. It is a very loud rumbleDo you know the sound I mean? It sounds a little bit like a roar of thunder. It is a loud, heavy low sound.

The Story: Ticket to Ride (with explanation)

Jerry and Brad are twin brothers. They do absolutely everything together. They have all of the same likes and dislikes, but their favourite things in the whole world are cars.

What do twin brothers Jerry and Brad do together? Absolutely everything. They have all of the same likes and dislikes, but their favourite things out of everything are cars.

One day, Jerry bought a new car, which Brad was very envious of.

Envy is a word to describe the desire to have something that someone else owns. You want it for yourself. Brad was jealous because Jerry bought a new car, one day.

Jerry bragged to Brad about how fast this car could go: “ I could get to Scotland quicker if I drove my car instead of getting a train.” Being jealous, Brad challenged him to this, and Jerry accepted.

Jerry told Brad about how fast this car could go. It’s so fast that he could drive to Scotland in less time than if he were to take a train to Scotland. Jealousy is another word for Envy. What does Brad do out of envy, jealousy? He challenges him, he says “lets do it.”  A race to Scotland, Jerry driving in his new car and Brad getting the train. This is the challenge. Jerry accepts. He says yes.

They began their race at their local train station. Jerry dropped him off in his car and beeped his horn loudly as he drove off.

Dropping someone off is another way of saying, giving them a lift. Taking them somewhere in your car. Jerry dropped Brad off at the train station where the race was going to begin. Jerry beeped his horn loudly as he drove off.

There wasn’t a direct train to Scotland, so Jerry had to get three different trains, which worried him, but he was still confident that he could beat Jerry.

Brad couldn’t get just one direct train to Scotland. He had to get three different trains, so he was worried that it might take him a while to get to Scotland. Did he think Jerry would beat him? No. Even though he was worried, he still believed that he would be quicker than Jerry. He was confident about this. To be confident is to be sure about something and having no doubt.

Paying no attention to the speed limits, Jerry zoomed up the motorways, chuckling as he went.

A speed limit is the maximum speed in which you are allowed to drive at. In England it is 70mph on the motorways. Was Jerry breaking the law? Yes. He was paying no attention to the speed limits. He zoomed up the motorway, faster than the speed limit, chuckling, laughing, as he went.

Every time he overtook someone, he would smile sinisterly at them through the window.

He smiled sinisterly, evilly, through the window at the people he overtook on the motorway.

When he was only 30 minutes away, he was driving through a small town and was approaching a ‘train crossing barrier, but because he was driving so fast, he didn’t see the warning signs.

When he was only 30 minutes away from the endpoint of the race, he was driving through a small town. He was approaching, getting close to, a ‘Train Crossing’ barrier but he was over the speed limit driving so fast that he didn’t see the ‘Train Crossing’ warning sign.

He suddenly braked, which made his tires screech, when he saw the barrier and a train rumbling past on the other side, but the car ploughed through the barrier and into the train.

He suddenly braked. He forcefully pushed his foot down on the brake pedal to stop the car. The wheels screeched! Did he stop in time? No! The car ploughed through the barrier into the train. This means that the car forcibly slammed through the barrier into the train at a high speed.

Brad was nearly at the finish line when the train conductor announced, “Sorry everyone, we need you to evacuate the train; we have hit a car.”

An announcement is a piece of information that is spoken aloud. When Brad was nearly at the finish line, the train conductor told everyone that they needed to evacuate the train because they had hit a car. Of course, this car was Jerry.
