Goodbye, mother

Owen is a young man. He lives by himself in a flat. He has a good job and a car of his own. He wears fine clothing to work.

One day after work, Owen stopped at the supermarket to buy a few things. He needed bread, milk, and eggs. An old woman followed him around the store. She had grey hair and walked slowly.

She followed him when he got his bread. She followed him when he got his eggs. And, she followed him when he got his milk. Finally, he went to pay for his groceries, but the old woman went in line in front of him.

“Excuse me,” she said, “I am sorry if I made you feel uncomfortable.” Owen smiled at her. He did not know what to say. “But, you look just like my son who died recently.”

Owen felt very sad. “I am very sorry,” he replied. “Is there anything I can do for you?”

“Yes,” she said. “When I leave, can you say, ‘Goodbye Mother’? It would make me feel so happy.”

“Yes, I can do that,” Owen said. He was happy to help the old woman feel better. As the old woman left the store, Owen called out, “Goodbye, Mother!” The old woman did not turn around or wave back at him.

Owen stepped up to pay for his groceries. The young woman who worked at the store said, “Your total is £109.75.”

“How can that be?” he asked. “I only bought bread, eggs, and milk!”

“Your mother said that you would pay for her,” said the young woman

The old woman’s story

A young man stopped at the supermarket to buy some bread, milk and eggs. I followed him around the store. When he went to the cash register, I went in line in front of him and apologised to bother him. I told him that my son had died recently and I think the young man felt sorry for me. When he asked me how he could help, I said he could say “goodbye mother” when I left. He did so, but then I think he got a shock when the shop-assistant said his total was £109.75. I told the shop assistant that I was this young man’s mother, and he would pay for everything.
