Cash or cheque
Martin was an old man. He was a mean man. He had no friends. His whole life,
he never spent his money. He saved a lot of money, but he was too greedy. He
never helped anyone else and he never bought gifts for his family.
Martin got very ill. He knew he would die so he called his doctor, his lawyer, and
his priest to be with him.
“You are the only people I trust,” Martin said. “You have helped me all my life.”
The doctor held Martin’s hand. The lawyer smiled down at him. The priest said a prayer.
Martin said, “People say you cannot take money with you when you die. But, I
want you to put these envelopes into my grave when they bury me.” Then, he
gave his doctor, his lawyer, and his priest envelopes full of money. Each
envelope had £50,000 in it. They were very surprised.
After Martin’s funeral, the doctor, the lawyer, and the priest were talking about
the money. The doctor said, “I must tell you something. I want to go on holiday
so I only put £40,000 in with Martin.”
The priest talked next. “I must also tell you something. We are doing repairs on
the church, so I only put in £25,000. I feel terrible about it.”
The lawyer got very angry. He said, “You are both terrible people! I put all of the
£50,000 in with Martin. I even added £10,000 extra!”
The doctor asked, “Why did you give that greedy man your money?”
The lawyer answered, “He was a good man. He came to me for advice for many years.
So, I wrote him a cheque for £60,000.”

The lawyer’s story
Martin was an old, mean man who saved a lot of money but never helped
anybody. One day, Martin got ill, so he called the doctor, the priest and me.
Martin said we were his only friends and asked us to put 3 envelopes into his
grave. He gave us the envelopes which contained £50,000 each and soon
died. After the funeral, we met and talked about the money. The doctor said his
envelope contained only £40,000 because he wanted to go on holiday. The
priest said his envelope contained only £25,000 because he was doing repairs on
the church. I was mad and said the doctor and the priest were terrible people
because my envelope contained an extra £10,000 so I put £60,000 in it.
However, the £60,000 wasn’t in cash; it was on a cheque.
