A crowded bus
Mr and Mrs Barnes, and their two young children have just moved to a new city.
Their new house is in a nice neighbourhood.
On their second day in the city, Mr Barnes went to work, and the children went
to school. Mrs Barnes stayed at home to unpack boxes.
Suddenly, Mrs Barnes heard a knock at the door. When she answered the door,
she saw another woman standing there. She had her purse and some shopping
bags.
“Good morning,” Mrs Barnes said to the visitor.
“Good morning,” the visitor said. “My name is Ann Hanson. I am your neighbour
down the street. I am going to the market now. Do you need any food?”
“Thank you!” Mrs Barnes said. “My name is Jennifer Barnes. We just moved in
yesterday and we do need food. I do not know how to get to the market. May I
come with you?”
“Please do,” Ann answered. “I always take the bus. It is easy to get to the market
and back home.” Jennifer put on her coat and got her purse. The two women
walked to the bus stop.
While they were waiting, Ann said, “The bus is always full, but I get a seat.”
“How do you do that?” Jennifer asked.
“Wait and see,” Ann said with a smile.
Ann and Jennifer got on the bus. As usual, it was full. There were no empty seats
and some people were standing. Ann said, “Perhaps those two very handsome
men will give us their seats.”
Six men stood up quickly, and both Ann and Jennifer sat down in the nearest
seats.
