The Candles
Kathy and Andrew were planning a big party for their daughter’s birthday but couldn’t decide on a single thing. The day had come and still nothing was sorted.
“Red!”
“No, it’s yellow’!” Andrew shot back as they were standing in a party shop looking at balloons.
“Andrew, I know what my daughter’s favourite colour is!” Kathy said.
“Oh, and I don’t?”
“Trust me, Andrew. We are getting red balloons,” she said as she took some balloons off the rack.
“Andrew, can I trust you to get candles, a card and some snacks while I get the photos developed to put on the walls?” Kathy had a serious look on her face.
“Yes!” Andrew said like a schoolboy.
A short while later, they met at the car and drove home to get the house ready for the party.
Kathy took the bag of party items and laid them on the table. There were the red balloons, two candles – one shaped like a 1, and one shaped like a 3 -, a birthday card with Darth Vader’s face on it and some crisps and nuts as snacks. Kathy looked thoroughly unimpressed.
“Andrew, what is the matter with you! She’s going to be 14, not 13, she’s allergic to nuts, and she doesn’t like Star Wars! She likes make-up and glitter and girly things! You’re a terrible dad; how can you not know anything about your own daughter!”
As the night went on, Andrew only came in when it was time for the cake. He took it over to his daughter, Elanor, while singing “Happy Birthday to You”.
“Andrew, what are you doing?!” Kathy bellowed. Andrew said nothing; he just looked confused.
“It’s my birthday, dad… wrong daughter,” said Elanor’s sister, Rachel, from the other side of the room rather glumly.
Andrew turned to Elanor in excitement.
“Oh! I knew it! I knew your favourite colour was yellow, that you loved nuts and Star Wars, and will be 13 on your next birthday! I’m not a bad dad after all!”
He got up to leave but then turned to Rachel. “Oh, and happy birthday, by the way.”

The story
Kathy and Andrew were planning a big party for their daughter’s birthday but couldn’t decide on a single thing, so when the day had come, nothing was sorted.
In the gift shop, Andrew and Kathy had an argument about their daughter’s favourite colour. In the end, Kathy put some red balloons into her shopping basket and asked Andrew to collect candles, a card and some snacks.
When they had got home, they put all the items on the table. Kathy got mad at her husband as nothing seemed to be right: the candles formed the wrong number, the snacks were allergen, and the card had Darth Vader’s face on it.
When the cake time had come, Andrew came downstairs to give the cake to his daughter, Elanor. However, he soon realised he had made a mistake as it wasn’t Elanor’s birthday but Rachel’s.
After some confusion, his face lit up and said he wasn’t a bad father as he did remember Elanor’s favourite colour, her favourite Star Wars character and her age correctly. As he got up to leave, he quickly said ‘Happy Birthday’ to Rachel.
