The School Dance
Beth couldn’t believe it. Today was the day. She rose out of bed with a gigantic smile on her face as she thought about the day ahead.
Two weeks ago, Beth was asked to the High School Leavers’ Dance by the most popular guy in the school, Scott. He was tall, handsome, smart and was the captain of the football team. Every girl wanted to hold Scott’s arm while walking onto the dance floor. Beth felt such pride and honour that it was going to be her.
The day ahead was all planned. Beth was going shopping with her friend, Liz, for the perfect dress to wear. They would then do their makeup, hair and then get picked up by their dates from Liz’s house.
“No!” Beth bellowed as she read a text message on her phone. Her mother, in earshot, asked her what the matter was.
“Liz forgot she was having a dentist appointment. We were supposed to be buying our dresses together!”
“Well, I’m going out shopping for Gran’s birthday. Why don’t you come with me and I’ll help you look? Then I’ll drop you round to Liz’s, alright?” her mother said, trying to defuse the situation.
Beth was a little relieved. She agreed, and they rushed out the door.
While they were shopping, Beth’s mum got her Gran some slippers, a hot water bottle and a new nightie to sleep in. They then bought Beth the most beautiful, floor-length, navy blue, satin dress, and high heels to match. Beth couldn’t wait to show Liz her new dress.
Due to traffic, by the time Beth got to Liz’s house, they only had forty minutes to get ready. She rushed out of the car with the shopping bag, up to Liz’s bedroom and immediately began doing her hair and makeup. When she had finished this, she reached for the shopping bag to put on the dress.
“No, no, NO!”
“What is it?” Liz asked with a worried tone.
“This cannot be happening!” Beth said frustratedly as she pulled her Gran’s new nightie out of the bag.
