A daily run

Keith, a 65-year-old man, was overweight. His daughter had pleaded with him for years to go to the doctor, but he was too ashamed. He knew that if he went to the doctor’s, he would have to admit to decades of unhealthy eating, smoking, excessive drinking and neglecting any kind of exercise. One day, however, Keith fell over.

He was walking into his living room and tripped over the rug. Because he was so heavy, he could not pull himself back up, so he had to call his daughter to come and help him.

“Dad! Now will you go to the doctor’s?” his daughter yelled as she saw him lying on the floor. Keith nodded and booked an appointment with the doctor.

“Good morning,” the doctor said as Keith entered the surgery the very next day.
“Hello, Doctor. I’m having problems with my weight.”
“Well, what is your diet like?” the doctor asked.
“Unhealthy,” Keith plainly replied.
“Are you a smoker? Are you a heavy drinker? Do you exercise?” the doctor listed.
“Yes, yes and no.”
“Well, you need to quit smoking, drink far less alcohol and start exercising! I want you to run 5 miles every day for a year and then we will assess your progress,” the doctor said.

Keith agreed and left the surgery determined. A year later Keith phoned the doctor.

“Hello! I’ve been doing a 5-mile run every single day for a whole year just as you said, only I don’t know what to do now.”

“Well, I’m glad you’ve been keeping up with your exercise. Now you need to keep exercising regularly,” the doctor wisely told him.

“No, doctor, you don’t understand. I mean I’m lost. I’ve been running 5 miles every day, so I’m now 1825 miles from home!”

The story (version A)

Keith, who was a 65-year-old man, was overweight which is why his daughter had pleaded with him for years to go to the doctor. However, he was too ashamed since if he went to the doctor, he would have to admit to his unhealthy habits which he did not want to admit.

One day, tripping over the rug, Keith fell over in his living room and when he could not pull himself up, he had to ask his daughter to come and help him.

“Dad! Now will you go to the doctors?” his daughter yelled.

Keith nodded, booked an appointment with the doctor and went to the doctor the next day.

After he had told the doctor that he had problems with his weight, the doctor asked about Keith’s lifestyle and about his eating habits, drinking, exercising etc. When Keith told him about his unhealthy lifestyle, the doctor suggested he should run 5 miles a day for a year. Also, the doctor said that they would assess his progress in a year. Determined, Keith agreed with the doctor.

A year had passed when Keith phoned the doctor, telling him that he had followed his advice for a year and that he didn’t know what to do. Of course, the doctor told him to continue exercising regularly, but Keith replied he was lost. He said that he’d been running 5 miles every day and was 1825 miles from home!
