A Name to Remember
Nick works as a gardener for a small company in Yorkshire. Everyone knows each other well, but this hasn’t always been the case. Seven years ago, Nick had one of the worst days he had ever had. His parents had just recently died in a violent car accident. It was his first day at work, and he was still distraught. In an effort to cheer him up, his boss came over with a fresh coffee.
“Here you are Mike. I’m so sorry this has happened. Why don’t you take the rest of the day off?” he said sympathetically. A red mist filled Nick’s eyes. He had had enough.
“It’s Nick! Nick! You’ve known me for two years and still can’t get my name right.”
“Oh, I’m sorry. Listen, I know you’re upset, but you don’t need to take it out on me, Mick,” his boss replied.
“My name is Nick!” he boomed as he stormed off.
That evening Nick drove over to his boss’s house to get revenge on him for two years of forgetting his name. He pulled out a shovel and began digging holes in his boss’s perfect-looking lawn.
“This will teach him,” he thought to himself as soil flung all around him.
Suddenly, the police turned up at the house and Nick’s boss was staring down at him from his bedroom window. Because nothing had been stolen, the police fined Nick and let him go. Nick’s boss also forgave him because of the difficult day he was having. Nick continued to work for his boss but avoided him as much as possible, and they both soon forgot about the incident.
A month later, however, Nick’s boss woke up and opened his curtains. Suddenly, he had a flashback to Nick tearing up his garden because now as he looked down at his lawn, he saw newly bloomed flowers which spelt out: It’s NICK!

The story (version A)
Nick is employed as a gardener for a small company where everyone is familiar with each other. Seven years ago, Nick had one of the most awful days of his life because not long before, his parents had tragically died in a violent car accident which now made Nick distraught. His boss made a feeble effort to cheer him up by coming over with a fresh coffee.
“Here you are Mike,” he began and trying to sympathize with Nick, he continued, “I’m sorry this has happened.”
Then, with a kind smile, he said, “Why don’t you take the rest of the day off?”
Nick had had enough, and a red mist filled his eyes. Exploding, he shouted, “My name is Nick! Nick! You have known me for two years and still can’t get my name right!”
When his boss tried to calm him down, he mistook his name again, saying “You needn’t take it out on me, Mick”, which made Nick respond furiously, “My name is Nick!”, and then he stormed off.
Later that night, he drove to his boss’s house so that he could get revenge on him for 2 years of not calling him by the right name. While he was digging holes in his boss’s impeccable lawn, the police turned up and led him away. Nick’s boss was watching from his bedroom window but since nothing had been stolen, the police fined Nick and let him go.
Thanks to the fact that Nick’s boss was understanding and forgave him, Nick was able to keep his job, but the relationship between the two was rather awkward for a while. Soon, however, both of them forgot about the incident.
A month later, when Nick’s boss woke up and opened his curtains, he looked down at his lawn. At that instant, he had a flashback to Nick tearing up his garden: he saw newly bloomed flowers which spelt out: ‘It’s NICK!’
