Modul 5: Hangutánzó szavak: 03 Autumnal Comfort
Sounds: cracking, rattling, crackle
Video 01
Hi. Let’s look at some more sounds.
What sound does this make when you open it up? When you open a nut it cracks. That’s why the tool that is used to open a nut, is called a nutcracker. Because it cracks. A nut cracks.
This is not to be mistaken with a crackle, however. Crackling is the sound that fire makes. A fire crackles because when the wood gets hot enough, gases inside the wood create little areas of steam which then burst open from the wood – so, it crackles.
A similar sound to a crackle is a rattle. You can get childrens toys that make a rattling sound, but the rattling that we will be looking at is the rattle of wind on a window.
The Story: Autumnal Comfort (with explanation)
Smiling, Thomas wraps his hand around his brand new nutcracker and cracks open another hazelnut.
Is Thomas happy in this moment? Yes, he is smiling as he wraps his hands around his not old but new nutcracker.
It is November, his favourite month. Thomas is a writer so doesn’t leave his house much, but when he does, he goes out on long walks through his local park.
Does Thomas like November? Yes he loves it because its his favourite month. His job is to write books so he is a Writer which means that he doesn’t go outside a lot. Where does he go when he does go out? Through his local park. He’ll be out for a long time because when he goes to his local park he goes on not short walks but long walks.
Autumn always comforts Thomas because he loves the tranquillity that comes with the season.
Thomas loves Autumn because it comforts him, it makes him feel safe because it is tranquil, its, peaceful, its calming.
The park is always peacefully quiet, the burnt orange-coloured leaves fall around him, the air is crisp and he always looks forward to the evenings when he wraps himself up in a blanket and cosies up in front of his fireplace.
The park is peaceful, quiet and colourful because of the dark orange autumn leaves that fall off of the trees. The air is crisp. A crisp air is a fresh air, a pleasantly cool air. Thomas always looks forward to or is excited about the moment that he can wrap up in, put a blanket around him and cosy up, settle down in front of his fire.
This is exactly what Thomas is doing this evening.
What is Thomas doing this evening? He is cosying up, in front of his fireplace whilst wrapped up in a blanket.
Thomas picks out the hazelnut from the case that he has just cracked open, joyfully pops it into his mouth and lets out a sigh of relief.
Thomas has been cracking nuts open with his new nutcracker and he picks up the nut that he has cracked open and joyfully, happily, pops it into his mouth. And what does he do? He lets out a sigh of relief.
The gentle wind can be heard rattling on the window.
The wind isn’t harsh and rapid, it’s a gentle wind which is rattling on his window.
The heat of the fire is spreading across his face whilst his body is warmly cuddled up in his woolly blanket.
The heat, the warmth of the fire spreads across his face. And what is his body doing? It’s cuddled up, cosily inside the woolly blanket.
Thomas lives alone, so there is no noise around him, other than the wind rattling on the window and the faint sound of the wood crackling on the fire.
Thomas lives alone, not with family, not with friends or even a cat or dog. He lives on his own so there is no noise around him except for the gentle wind that is rattling on the window and the faint sound, or subtle, you know, you can only just about hear it, the faint sound of the wood crackling on the fire.
What Thomas is blissfully unaware of however is that outside the cool air turns to freezing cold air and dainty snowflakes are beginning to fall.
To be blissfully unaware of something, you are really happy but completely unaware, not knowing, that something bad is happening at the same time as you being happy. So, Thomas is blissfully unaware that outside the nice cool air turns to freezing cold air, brrr, and dainty,or small, delicate snowflakes are beginning to fall.
As the temperature is changing, so is the season. Winter has come early.
As the temperature becomes colder, Autumn becomes winter.
